How we install it

Quick install, properly engineered.

01

Excavation

100–150mm dig depending on use and existing surface.

02

Sub-base

75–100mm MOT Type 1 fully compacted. Stops the shingle bedding into soft ground.

03

Membrane

Heavy-duty woven weed membrane laid wall-to-wall with overlapped joints.

04

Edging

Brick, sleeper, kerb or steel edging — without it the shingle goes everywhere.

05

Stabilising grid (optional)

Honeycomb panels for sloped or heavily-used drives. Cuts migration to near zero.

06

Shingle layer

40–50mm of angular shingle, raked level, with a slight top-up over the membrane.

What affects the price

Honest pricing.

Edging style

Hidden steel edging is cheapest; railway sleepers, brick kerbs or granite setts add £20–£60/linear m.

Stabilising grid

Honeycomb panels add ~£25/m². Worth it for sloped drives, daily use, or wheelchair access.

Aggregate

Standard Cotswold buff at £40/m²; premium slates at £50/m². Custom or imported aggregates cost more.

Existing surface

If we're going over existing tarmac/concrete we may need to remove or scarify. If it's lawn or soil it's just dig out.

Drainage

Shingle drains so well there's rarely additional drainage work. If sub-base is clay we may add a French drain.

Decorative borders

Block-paved or brick borders are popular and add £30–£50/m. Visually transformative.

Shingle FAQs

The questions people ask.

How much does a shingle driveway cost?
Shingle and gravel driveways cost £40–£70 per m² in Oxfordshire and Berkshire — the most cost-effective surface we offer. A 40m² driveway typically lands between £2,000 and £3,000 including excavation, membrane, edging and the shingle layer.
What shingle works best for driveways?
For driveways carrying car weight, use 20mm angular shingle (not rounded pea shingle, which migrates under tyres). Cotswold buff, golden flint and grey slate are the most popular choices in Oxfordshire.
Does shingle migrate?
Yes, all shingle migrates slightly under car traffic — but a properly designed driveway minimises it. The keys are angular (not rounded) stones, a stable edge restraint, and an honeycomb stabilising grid for sloped drives or daily use.
Do I need a SuDS soakaway with shingle?
Shingle is fully permeable so it's SuDS-compliant from the start — water drains straight through into the sub-base. No additional soakaway is required, and no planning permission is needed regardless of area.
How long does shingle last?
The shingle itself is essentially permanent. Most driveways need a top-up of fresh shingle every 5–7 years to replace what's migrated. Edging and weed membrane typically last 15–20 years.
Can shingle be stabilised?
Yes — we install honeycomb stabilisation grids (like Gravelfix or Core Driveways) under the shingle. They lock stones in place, are SuDS-compliant, and make the surface drivable for wheelchairs and prams.
