How we build it

Sub-base, drainage, then the pretty bit.

01

Site visit & design

Measure up, discuss vision, talk materials. We sketch on the spot for smaller projects.

02

Fixed quote

Itemised quote with material costs, labour days and clear inclusions/exclusions.

03

Excavation

Dig out to firm subgrade, set falls for drainage away from the house and into garden borders.

04

Sub-base & mortar

100–150mm Type 1, then a mortar bed for stone laying. Every stone fully bedded, not spot-fixed.

05

Stone laying

Hand-laid with 8–10mm joints, set level with a 1:80 slope for run-off. Cuts done on a wet-cut saw.

06

Jointing & sealing

Grout joints with stone-friendly compound, seal sandstone against staining, full final clean.

What affects the price

Honest pricing.

Stone choice

Sandstone is £120/m²; porcelain £160/m²; natural granite £200+/m². Manufacturer ranges add 15–25%.

Access

Side-return-only access (very common in Oxford terraces) means hand-balling materials in and out. Adds 15–25% to labour.

Drainage & falls

Sloping garden, high water table or non-permeable surface near house may need a linear drain or French drain.

Walls & steps

Retaining walls priced by height and length. Single steps £180–£250 each.

Patterns & cuts

Curves, circles and herringbone patterns increase waste and cutting time. Worth it for the look.

Lighting & electrics

If you want LED edge lights or feature uplighters we'll partner with a Part P electrician — typically £600–£1,500.

Landscaping FAQs

The questions people ask.

How much does a patio cost?
Indian sandstone patios start at £120/m² installed; porcelain patios from £160/m². A typical 25m² patio with edge restraints and drainage costs £3,500–£5,500 depending on stone choice and access.
What's the difference between sandstone and porcelain?
Sandstone is natural — warmer tones, more variation, slightly porous (needs sealing). Porcelain is manufactured — ultra-flat, frost-proof, non-porous and virtually maintenance-free. Sandstone is cheaper; porcelain lasts longer and stays cleaner.
Do you do garden design as well as build?
Yes. For smaller projects we sketch ideas during the site visit. For full garden redesigns we work with a partner garden designer who produces planting plans, hard landscaping layouts and 3D visuals, then our team builds it.
How long does landscaping take?
A patio install is typically 4–7 working days. A full garden redesign with walls, planting and patio takes 2–4 weeks depending on scope. We give you a firm schedule in the written quote and stick to it.
Do you build retaining walls?
Yes. Concrete-block walls with stone or render cladding for over-1m walls; sleeper retaining walls for lower garden divisions. We design to engineered drainage so walls don't bow.
Do you lay turf?
Yes — both rolled lawn turf and artificial turf. For real turf we strip topsoil, lay 50–100mm of screened topsoil, rake level, then lay premium turf. For artificial we lay a permeable sub-base and a stabilised aggregate layer.
