What works where

The terraces in north Oxford (OX2) usually have small front gardens — under 20m² — and tight side-return access. Block paving works beautifully here because the small-scale block patterns suit the period architecture. Resin bound in Cotswold buff is also popular in conservation areas where decorative finishes are encouraged.

Cowley (OX4) homes around the BMW plant and Donnington Bridge tend to have longer driveways — 30–50m². Tarmac with a block-paved trim is the most popular choice here: cost-effective, visually softer than plain tarmac, and quick to install.

Local restrictions to know about

• Conservation areas — Jericho, Norham Manor and Park Town all have conservation overlays. Permeable finishes are encouraged; non-permeable surfaces may need planning permission.
• Listed buildings — Pre-1840 properties along the High Street, Catte Street and Holywell Street need listed building consent. We handle the application as part of the quote.
• Dropped kerbs — If you don't have one already, Oxfordshire County Council needs to approve and install. Allow 6–8 weeks; we can recommend an approved contractor.
